Your argument is does not apply to this situation – you are over-simplifying, imho.

As for the video, Alex Jones himself labels his site a “Conspiracy-tinted site containing strong opposition to socialism, communism, and the New World Order..” so you tell me.

You should stick to what you actually know instead of labeling a documentary (which if you watch it, mostly takes major media coverage of comments by U.S. policy makers, and their subsequent contradicting actions) you have not even watched “a conspiracy movie”. Cheers.

Ok so Alex Jones’ site says that “Whether a workable, fair, and reasonable mandatory service requirement for all able young people could be developed.” wording has been dropped from the version passed by the Senate. One step back for “national enslavement”, but there is plenty of time. Don’t give up hope yet.

Oh please, you sure like to read between the lines…and outside the lines…and make up your own lines. I made no such personal attack whatsoever. All I’m saying, through exaggeration, is you were not being clear on why you find this legislation so scary. Now you are finally saying the wording is insidious, and possibly the intention. The former I mostly agree with, the latter I do not.

Look we have moved on to personal attacks! Always a great way to make a point. Glad you chose the high ground there.

The wording, aka semantics, is a problem.

A Volunteer is one who Volunteers – not one who is forced to do something.

My children’s, and my own, values have nothing to do with it. Attacking them is both offensive and classless.

Right now they MUST learn things that do not interest them. They MUST take PE or some variation. Hell, at some schools they MUST wear only certain clothes. I don’t understand what’s the difference between this MUST and any other of the many MUSTS they deal with in school. So you guys have a problem with community service as it is worded in the legislation? Just like any legislation, it is overkill. If you have a problem with community service, then just say it. If the issue is you don’t want your kids “forced” to help people, and you’d rather teach them your own Ayn Rand-esque value system then just say it. If you think it is just some fancy worded way of the government pushing their beliefs of (“helping others”) on your kids, then say it. Those are all acceptable protests to this bill. It could be translated as restricting your civil rights, and my guess is the Supreme Court would agree.

On the other hand, if you think this is big step towards your kids becoming some kind of “Tween Militia”, then that is your extrapolation.

I have a problem with it. By that rationale by student must do community service to graduate? Not sure how MUST DO is voluntary anything.

I don’t see a problem with including community service as part of a curriculum requirement. Sounds like glorified field trips to me, and my guess is if a parent doesn’t want their kid to be included then there will be workarounds. Also, I like the wording “investigate…a workable, fair, and reasonable mandatory service…”
