Well… the Honorable Senator from Louisiana gets points for calling Gore’s heavy use of rhetoric as fact “cutesy”. However, at the opening the Senator himself says there are facts presented from credible scientists illuminating both sides, for and against, global warming. Ergo, to use the presented vernacular in a manner that he would find familiar (note: regardless of mathematical relevancy…), there is a “chance going either way of global warming taking place”.
Instead of citing the need for further evidence required to provide for “proof” naturally leading to a suspension of debate until such time as data can provide a credible path, the Senate panel’s sum total foci is placed solidly upon the assertion of absolute economic distress to the U.S. based on current planned strategies for offsetting carbon dioxide. The observed groupthink quickly solidifies upon a guilty until proven innocent skew against Gore (Note: And I’m no fan of Al). As a result, borrowing heavily from my old logic class of my undergrad days (circa 1989), they are shown proposing a circumventing of current efforts prescribing the scientific method to prove (beyond a critical doubt) one way or the other, thereby firmly setting their agenda (by default) within the non-global warming camp.
This position is illogical and irresponsible given what is (possibly) at stake. One cannot assert evidence as being uniformly spread across available options then proceed to legislate based on selecting a specific option.
Oh, one new f-a-c-t: An Australian longitudinal study’s findings have just been released showing that although plants “thrive” in increased CO2 environments, their ability to germinate and grow produce is negatively correlated to this increase in gas. So as a result, we’ll enjoy really green landscapes with little-to-no fruits or vegetables.
Guilty. I was just going for a cheap shot at Gore. Great Swindler!
I still liked the video put together by a math professor as to why you at least consider cleaning stuff up. He didn’t propose these glorious tax increases 9that will be used for what we have no idea) but he did use a nice logical argument for at least getting started on cleaning up the environment.
Agreed with all posters. However, as is usual with our particular branch on the Hominidae family tree, we deal with complex situations such as “global warming” in extremely irrational ways. The pendulum is not defined by its intermittent range but by its two top arc positions. Yes – No.
If Yes: It matters little with why there is elevated Co2 leading to a tipping point with mass Methane ejaculate from the thawing permafrost in Canada and Russia. We can bicker about China’s escalating emissions. India can refuse to negotiate. All of our children will still deal with the consequences of our (in)actions in this realm.
Of note, I find the newest theories in carbon sequestration utilizing “soil farms” fascinating.
If No: It matters little that global warming was illuminated as an intermittent increase with little long lasting effect. The sum total of the human exercise in forcing global introspection upon how we exist on this little blue marble will establish the principles and technologies to make sure that 7+ billion people can co-exist with the ever-dwindling diversity of life on Gaia. All of our children will still deal with the consequences of our (in)actions in this realm.
Of note, E.O. Wilson (a hero of mine) is a great resource to understand the impact humans are having on the Global Ecosystem and his conservative predictions of the 6th large scale extinction (since the birth of our planet).
I really enjoyed the television program titles something like “Life after Humans”. May not be the title, but it did talk about how the Earth will basically reclaim everything man has done with 200 years of our demise. That is refreshing news to be sure.
