WTF have we become?

This is Selena Gomez.

Selena is obviously beautiful, and some could argue talented. I have no issue with this. My problem is that according to that wikipedia entry she was born on July 22, 1992, which by my calculation makes her 17 years old.  Reportedly she has been singing on stage dressed akin to this video since 2004, or the ripe old age of 12/13. Why do I bring any of this up?

Frankly it has nothing to do with Selena beyond the fact that she is the perfect example to the point to my article. Why is it that we as a society have become so much about facilitating the view of beauty that we have escalated its importance to such a degree that we are making young teenagers into sex objects. One can argue against that, but really, in the video displayed here can we really dismiss the fact that young Selena here has been thrown on stage with what used to be called hot pants?

I firmly believe that pedophiles should be executed. There is a gray line there that many states take a bit far, such as the 18 year old having sex with his/her 17 year old boyfriend/girlfriend when they started dating both under the legal age, but when we are promoting the youthful of our nation to look and act like sex symbols what are we really aiming to accomplish? Sex sells, everyone gets that, in fact we are inundated with it on a daily basis in advertising, however where is the line at?

Britney Spears was sexually glorified long before she turned 18 years old. The internet comments on her body back then were nothing shy of pornographic. Comments like “I know she isn’t legal, but I’d… well you know.” And if you did you’d go to prison and become someone named Bubba’s play thing. So why are we pushing this envelope? If we all agree that having sex with what is classified as a minor is gross, sick, twisted and illegal then why are we pimping the young in the way that we are?

Think about that the next time you go to a High School car wash where the cheerleaders or dance team are running around cleaning your car wearing tiny bikinis. They are kids and apparently as long as it is for a good cause we can pimp out their young bodies to make a dollar. It is tragic to me how far we have fallen.

you already know the answer to your question: Money.

agreed as to the premise behind the relaxing or amending of a long-held social norm.

however from a more holistic viewpoint, if one was to conduct a non-scientific observational study as to the types of fashion that girls (below the age of 18) are wearing, you would find their styles to be IDENTICAL to women (above the age of 18). i know this from shopping with my daughter, who is WELL BELOW 18.

the objectification of the american female has taken hold. the extraneous influencers are constant and reaffirming – it is everywhere, all the time. the reasons behind this are much more than the dollar.

i offer my own theory in the form of a question: when did a female’s personal respect and self-identity become superseded by pure ego and narcissism re-enforced by a lowering of sexual ethical standards? when did the scenario change from burning a bra in defiance to wearing a whale-tail g-string while rudely snapping, “what are you looking at!” (well, i’m looking at your underwear pulled above your waste-line, you prostitute).

my daughter will remember her daddy always stating (in this order)… “you are extremely intelligent and very beautiful”.

as a culture, we’ve promoted the opposite far too long (and this is coming from a red-blooded american male).

I failed to mention that this video is often shown on THE DISNEY CHANNEL. In fact it is the only reason I even knew this girl existed – my 2.5 year old enjoys the Disney channel – I now understand why.
