My Issue with Hollywood

This is Megan Fox. It is obvious that she is beautiful, some would say breathtaking. You don’t have to be a genius, or even a guy, to notice this – although men typically notice immediately as men are 90% visually stimulated and frankly, women just look better than we do. So we have established that Megan here is beautiful, so can she act? Meh. She gets the job done but is also clearly working on her talents and is thus getting newer, bigger projects. Her career, like most in Hollywood, started fairly small and now she is the drool machine staring opposite Shia LaBeouf in the very successful Transformers movie series based on the Hasbro toys and cartoon series of the 80s.

Onto my issue – must Hollywood constantly beat us over the head with the fact that someone like Megan Fox is hot? We get it – it is why she is in movies to begin with. Face it, there are not loads of ugly people her age in movies – especially in big budget flicks – unless of course they are ridiculously talented. If you watch any of the Transformers films (I saw Transformers 2 just last night and thus was compelled to write this piece – btw I did not hate the film) then you are beat about the head and neck with Megan Fox’s image – in 500 different outfits. Again, we get it.

I understood, although also found it silly, when princess Amidala (played by the also beautiful, and arguably quite talented Natalie Portman), in the newest Star Wars trilogy,  changed outfits more times than the film changed scenes – George Lucas was trying to sell toys. That said I don’t see a whole line of Megan Fox toys coming out any time soon so we can only conclude that flaunting her in the film is to make the male crowd get aroused every time she comes on the screen – which is apparently supposed to make us more interested in the film. Here is the thing, at least for me, it doesn’t. If I wanted to drool over Megan Fox, or anyone else for that matter, all I need to do is open a web browser, go to google.com, type in said target’s name, clicks images, and search. Voila! Loads of pics – millions!

Here is an example – knock yourself out.

I liked the premise of this post.

Portman has an IQ well above room temperature. She understands the draw of sex as well as working on her craft as a performer, producer, and director. She mixes grace and poise with intellect. Fox is a moron who will burn-out and get tattoo’d-up n’ nasty before hitting 35 years old.

For those men who drive this type of Hollywood stupefaction – the reality won’t ever match the fantasy. When any female star comes to truly believe she is most desirious and beautiful is about the time popular culture turns her into the concept of community cum dumpster. The interesting thing is that most of these women seem to relish this evolution. At this point, Fox is nothing more than a high-priced hooker. Meat with legs – a Vulva with a visa card. I bet $10 that Megan can’t spell vulva.

Of a related note, Paris Hilton should be harvested, disinfected, grilled and fed to poor children in South America. Has anyone stopped to ask themselves, “why is this woman here” or “what is her purpose”?

I do not want to be a Fox defender, but in her interviews she generally comes off as self-aware and relatively intelligent. On one hand, that makes this hard-sell of sex even more unnecessary. On the other, maybe she is smart enough to realize she is currently not a good actress and therefore must get exposure any way she can. I don’t remember watching “Career Opportunities” and thinking that girl was going to be an Academy-Award winning actress in the future.

However, here’s my actual point. We are all sick of her for sure, especially the guys like me who don’t think she is all that hot. What’s scary is she has only been showcased in three movies in the last three years. What happens if the hype machine REALLY gets going? Yikes.

I find Megan Fox attractive physically, and must admit I have never heard her speak in anything outside of a Transformers movie. That said I am just tired of being reminded 5 trillion times in a film that a woman is attractive. I mean – we get it. Same thing was done with Angelina Jolie, then people figured out that she could sort of act and that changed a bit.

You want to see an amazing movie with Portman? Watch Closer – side note she is also hot in it.

  4. BayAreaDM says:

Closer was good, the script more than anything. Natalie Portman is a great actress, but did not start out marketed as a sex symbol – at least I didn’t notice. Jolie, on the other hand, is a great comparison. I guess it is all about picking her roles, and right now Fox is not interested in any good ones.

All-in-all, the hardcast roles offered to women are ridiculous. In fact, the roles offered to men are offensive as well. If a foreigner was to visit this country and simply be exposed to advertising on television, he or she would be forced to assume that men (in particular, white men) are very stupid here.

I know not of any specifics related to Ms. Fox other than as a consumer of the marketing engine put into place on her behalf. And the consumerable produced by this effort leads me to believe she if either not suffering from overactive synaptic activity or extremely smart and milking this thing knowing the future holds nothing for her – sly like a… ahem.

Where is the blockbuster showing a woman scientist? Or a man who isn’t “trained in specops combat”? I understand this to be a reflection of what we, as a people, want to see – but this a lowest common denominator principles at play. I’m forced to choose movies that were produced for a population that is literally driving the average IQ below 100.

However, I must admit that I’m an atypical stratum within the move-going demographic. The movie “The Hangover” was repeatedly promoted to me by friends and family as something “I had to go see”. I left the theater completely frustrated. Everyone was laughing and I didn’t get the point of the humor – sophomoric (which is OK) but without the required depth of premise to support the slapstick. I’m still puzzled by the hype.

I hate to break it to you sir, but our dumbest movies are the most popular overseas. Where do you think all these crap movies that lose money make up the box office? Why do you think Tom Cruise, Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock (Morgan Freeman Honorary Oscar notwithstanding) continue to get PAID? Roland Emmerich continues to churn out crap movies to admiring fans the world over.

If you have been watching the wonderful Best Foreign Picture nominees like myself, those are often the exception. Before “Avatar”, the all-time highest grossing movie in China was…”2012″. Yikes. “Dragon Wars” is the highest-grossing Korean film. Double yikes. “Forbidden Kingdom”, one of the dumbest and stereotypical martial arts movies I have ever seen made much more money overseas than in the U.S. If a foreigner was exposed to the commercials to these movies, they would be in familiar territory.

I am also not a typical moviegoer, but I found “The Hangover” nonetheless very funny in several ways. I think people who could sympathize with the characters without the usual required depth are better off. I suppose that is one reason “Office Space” is so funny without any back story to the characters – just about anyone can relate to the office drones.

You aren’t “forced” to watch anything. Wait for DVD, or go see something at an independent cinema near you. Movie theaters have been focused on teenagers since I was a teenager, and especially for the past decade or so. I saw by far more crap movies between the age of 18 and 22 than I have seen the 15 years since. New technology like IMAX and 3D are going to make lazy, dumb movies more prevalent, I fear.

The success of “The Hangover” is actually a big deal, because it shows that a comedy geared towards “adults” without a buttload of marketing and/or big stars can make money.

Now if Keanu Reeves can get an Oscar, then the apocalypse can surely arrive.

  7. caravaggio says:

Agreed. Point in case, Jerry Lewis is an icon in France. His humor is so elementary as to make the Three Stooges look advanced. However, try as I may, I still do not understand “The Hangover”. Although, per your example, I did like “Office Space”. Oh, and Emmerich is an idiot. A wealthy idiot.

The “least common denominator” part of this topic is the real tragedy. If it did not work then film makers would not cater to it. Face it, as a culture we lower our IQ each and every year. I will avoid the conspiracy theory side of this conversation – however I will state that all problems are solvable – if you actually want to solve them.

You want to make an intelligent movie? Do it. Will it sell? Doubtful. Why? Because people are just THAT STUPID. Regarding The Hangover – I had no idea why it was hailed as the next coming of comedy. My Niece when on and on about how awesome it was. the only thing that I found cool about the film was the back drop which was a group of guys trying to solve a mystery – that being what the hell happened last night? The way that was done was clever and yet was basically glossed over by everyone.

    Further proof people are stupid.

I also find it tragic that we have an industry where beauty is glorified and skill is almost ignored and yet someone like Meryl Streep (I am not a fan but respect her work) can somehow still thrive. That said – very few actresses are graced with good/great roles as she is. Pattern?
