True story: I have a friend whom I will call Juan. He was browsing the local Craigslist job postings and found one at his company that read suspiciously like his position. Juan was unaware of any dissatisfaction with his job, and knew for certain they would not hire a backup or coworker. So he confronted his manager and she said that it was “accidentally posted”. Juan didn’t buy it (would you?), and ever since he has wondered about the integrity of the company and his job security. Needless to say, he visits Craigslist more often than ever.
This is kind of the same situation that is occurring between Jay Cutler and the Denver Broncos. Except Jay Cutler has a guaranteed contract and is taking the situation personally, while Juan lives paycheck-to-paycheck like you and me. Either way, feeling disrespected is universal. In the case of Juan, it could be possibly solved by cash. But what happens when you don’t need cash? Ass-kissing is required, and the new coach doesn’t want to set that precedence. No matter what you read about trust, disrespect (or the implication thereof) is the bottom line. Jay Cutler is a top-10 quarterback with a bright future (he’s only 25 years-old!). Coach McDaniels strongly believes he knows what he’s doing, nurturing Tom Brady and Matt Cassel in New England. Which side will fold? My bet is on Cutler (who wants to go to Oakland or Detroit?), but anything could happen. Who’s to blame? McDaniels of course. He lied to Cutler from the start. If marriage has taught me anything, it is the fact that the first one to lie is always the guilty party in any relationship
